Prosper A. Bellizia, Esquire

Prosper A. Bellizia is one of New Jersey's most accomplished criminal defense attorneys, with more than 27 years of experience in criminal law. Over the course of his career, he has tried hundreds of jury trials. In addition to being a respected appellate attorney, Mr. Bellizia is committed to assisting you or a loved one who has been unfairly or improperly convicted of a crime.

Before serving as a criminal defense lawyer, Mr. Bellizia served as an Assistant Prosecutor in the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, the state's largest and busiest office. There he spent over 10 years in the trial section specializing in narcotics, violent crimes, homicides, fraud and sex crimes. In addition to his role as a trial prosecutor, he served in Professional Standards-Internal Affairs. This experience has proven valuable to his career as a criminal defense attorney because it afforded him a unique insight into the inner workings of police departments.

Simultaneously, he was appointed Director of Bias Crimes where he prosecuted hate crimes. He served as an instructor at the Essex County Police Academy for almost ten years.

Mr. Bellizia also served as a contract public defender in the Superior Courts of Essex and Union Counties. He was also as part-time public defender in South Orange Municipal Court.

Mr. Bellizia earned his undergraduate degree in accounting from Seton Hall University in South Orange in 1976 and served on its alumni board. He still serves his undergraduate alma mater as a mentor to students. In 1985, he graduated from Rutgers Law School and was admitted to the New Jersey State Bar, the United States District Court, and the District Court of New Jersey. As a practicing lawyer, Mr. Bellizia realizes the importance of remaining current and active in the professional community and belongs to the following organizations:
