Prosper A. Bellizia, Esquire

Prosper A. Bellizia is one of New Jersey’s most accomplished criminal defense attorneys, with more than 20 years of experience in criminal law. Over the course of his career, he has tried more than 100 jury trials. In addition to being a respected appellate attorney, Mr. Bellizia is committed to assisting you or a loved one who has been unfairly or improperly convicted of a crime.

Before serving as a criminal defense lawyer, Mr. Bellizia served as an Assistant Prosecutor in the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the state's largest and busiest office. There he spent over 10 years in the trial section specializing in narcotics, violent crimes, homicides, fraud and sex crimes. In addition to his role as a trial prosecutor, he was later promoted to Professional Standards-Internal Affairs. This experience has proven valuable to his career as a criminal defense attorney because it afforded him a unique insight into the inner workings of police departments. Simultaneously, he was appointed Director of Bias Crimes where he prosecuted hate crimes.

Mr. Bellizia earned his undergraduate degree in accounting from Seton Hall University in South Orange in 1976.  He still serves his undergraduate alma mater as a mentor to students. In 1985, he graduated from Rutgers Law School and was admitted to the New Jersey State Bar, the United States District Court, and the District Court of New Jersey.
